Hospitals across the United States are going paperless. The rapid implementation of health information technology by hospitals has led to a sharp increase in paperless care. According to an ASHP survey, 99% of hospitals across the country now use EHRs, compared to about 31% in 2003.  This has resulted in the overall efficiency of operations, greater data security, and convenience to all stakeholders involved.  Efforts are now being made across the healthcare industry to go paperless with auxiliary and supporting healthcare and medical research operations to achieve similar results.

Paper Based Surveys Needed to Go

Several hospitals administer surveys to patients when they come in for their scheduled visits. The rationale behind this is to gather inputs from patients on a periodic basis at the point where the patient is most engaged, which is when they are at the hospital. Conventionally, this was being done with paper-based surveys. Many issues were commonly encountered when using paper-based surveys. The whole process was slow and inefficient. It resulted in the tedious and error-prone task of manual data entry, difficulty in keeping track of survey states and poor rates of survey completion, to name a few.

The iPad is the Patient’s Friend

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) decided to go paperless with their surveys by using iPads to electronically administer surveys to young patients and their parents or guardians when they came in for hospital visits.

BTC developed the HealthWorks mobile app for CCHMC, a powerful iPad application with integration to CCHMC’s Health Information System that enabled hospital staff to seamlessly manage and operate electronic surveys for their patients. It also had a child-friendly UI/UX that helped maintain focus on the app while easily retaining survey states across patients.
